Jason Roy took three sixes off Claude Henderson in a 52-ball half-century as Surrey racked up 483 at Grace Road

Gary Wilson completed a maiden first-class century and Jason Roy hit a blistering 76 on his LV= County Championship debut as Surrey gained a stranglehold on their Division Two game against Leicestershire at Grace Road.

On a day curtailed to just 37.3 overs because of the weather, Surrey posted 483 to collect maximum batting points and Leicestershire were 32 without loss when rain swept in 50 minutes after lunch. Play was finally abandoned for the day two hours later.

Today's events leave the home side with a lot of work to do over the next two days if they are to keep alive their slim chances of promotion.

But there was plenty for Surrey to celebrate on a truncated second day as 24-year-old Ireland international Wilson and 20-year-old Durban-born Roy led the way in an exhilarating morning session.

Wilson began the day needing just six runs to reach his century and his nerves would not have been helped when he saw Mark Ramprakash bowled offering no shot to Matthew Hoggard without adding to his overnight 179.

But a short ball outside off stump from Nathan Buck gave Wilson his opportunity and he took it with a sweetly timed square-cut to reach 100 off 207 balls with 13 fours.

Although he was out soon afterwards for 125, caught at gully by Matthew Boyce off Nadeem Malik, Leicestershire were still unable to contain Surrey.

That was down to some brilliant batting from debutant Roy, who signalled his potential earlier in the season with a century in the Friends Provident t20.

After the departure of Wilson, Roy went into Twenty20 mode with some superb attacking strokes, including three sixes off left-arm spinner Claude Henderson.

Roy reached his fifty off 52 balls and, when Henderson finally had his revenge by having him caught at long-off, Roy had faced just 65.

The wicket was Henderson's 50th in the championship this season and he finished with 4-119. Malik and Hoggard each claimed three wickets.

Surrey were unable to make any breakthrough, however, in the 12.2 overs possible before the rain came as Boyce and Greg Smith survived a lively opening spell from the impressive Chris Tremlett.
