LV=, title sponsor of the County Championship, have launched a new award for the most promising young player in the competition.

The 'LV=County Championship Breakthrough Player Award' will celebrate the best young talent in the two divisions and demonstrate the importance of the competition as the bedrock of the domestic game as well as a breeding ground for the next generation of international cricketers.

An esteemed four-man panel has selected a shortlist of six players for the inaugural award, based on their performances in the championship this season.

Mike Gatting

Mike Gatting said: "It's been a great County Championship season so far, and these six players really stood out for the panel."

The panel comprises of LV= ambassador and ex-England bowler Darren Gough, former England captain and current managing director of partnerships at the ECB Mike Gatting, PCA chairman and Worcestershire batsman Vikram Solanki and cricket writer John Stern.

The six shortlisted players are Yorkshire's Gary Ballance and Joe Root, Surrey fast bowler Stuart Meaker, Derbyshire top-order batsman Dan Redfern, Kent all-rounder Matt Coles and Lancashire left-arm spin bowler Simon Kerrigan.

LV= head of sponsorship Claire Jeromson said: "This award will identify and champion the best young talent that is playing in the LV= County Championship.

“The competition continues to be the testing ground for the next crop of England players and, with the standard of the domestic game improving each season, it is important to recognise these promising young players."

Gatting added: "It's been a great County Championship season so far, and these six players really stood out for the panel. I sincerely hope that these players continue to perform, and go on to play for England Lions and England in the coming years."
