A sixth-wicket partnership of 143 between Adam Voges and Chris Read put LV= County Championship Division One leaders Nottinghamshire in a commanding position against Middlesex after day two at Uxbridge.

Voges made an accomplished 105 and Read, the former England wicketkeeper, a typically industrious 71 before Nottinghamshire were all out for 329 - a first-innings lead of 231 - when rain ended play at tea.

However, Middlesex had only themselves to blame after handing their opponents a clear advantage as they dropped both Voges and Read before they had settled in.

Voges had added only three to his overnight eight when he edged Toby Roland-Jones only for Ollie Rayner, diving from second slip in front of Andrew Strauss at first slip, to put down the chance.

Read had made 15 when he drove Corey Collymore fiercely to cover-point where a leaping Gareth Berg could not cling on.

Nottinghamshire had started the day 16 runs ahead with six wickets in hand and they had stretched their lead to 47 when Michael Lumb, who had just reached fifty off 119 balls with five fours, was caught behind off Tim Murtagh.

There was still plenty of encouragement for the seamers from a pitch on which Middlesex had been bowled out for 98, but it began to ease in the sunshine and Voges and Read made them pay for some slipshod fielding.

They put down six catches of varying degrees of difficulty in the innings and none more costly than the one offered by Voges, who did not give another chance on his way to a hundred off 167 balls with 11 fours.

Read was just as ruthless and had made his 71 off 112 balls, with six fours, when the second new ball brought his downfall. He got a delivery from Roland-Jones which seemed to stop on him and popped up a simple return catch.

Roland-Jones went on to take three more wickets to finish with 4-102, but not before Andre Adams had played a wonderful cameo in which he hit his first ball for six, his second for four, was dropped off his third and played on heaving at his fourth.

Voges was caught behind off Murtagh, the best of the Middlesex bowlers with 4-87, but their batsmen now have much to do to if they are to stay in the game.
