Leicestershire's eighth-wicket pairing of Shiv Thakor and Claude Henderson helped rescue a draw on a tense final day of their LV= County Championship Division Two clash against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road.

Northants batted for just 5.5 overs this morning to increase their total to 252 for five before declaring, which gave Leicestershire a target of 353 to win from 88 overs.

David Willey's 3-66 helped reduce them to 174 for seven, but Thakor and Henderson survived for 22 overs towards the close to secure a result that seriously dents the hosts' promotion hopes.

Northants began the day on 211 for three, 311 runs in front, with Alex Wakely resuming on 20 and Rob Newton on 26.

Newton added 11 until his leg stump was taken out in the fifth over by Robbie Joseph, who finally took his first wicket of the match.

Northants captain Andrew Hall then made nine before he fell to Nathan Buck at long-on, prompting the declaration with Wakely unbeaten on 38.

Leicestershire's chase began badly when Hall had Michael Thornely caught at mid-off in the fourth over.

It soon got worse as Willey made a double breakthrough, first with Will Jones edging to second slip to depart for 14. West Indies international Ramnaresh Sarwan had reached the same score when he had his middle and off stumps uprooted.

Leicestershire resumed after lunch in trouble on 58 for three and they lost Matthew Boyce for 19 when he was well taken by wicketkeeper David Murphy off Olly Stone.

Leicestershire gloveman Ned Eckersley did his best to ensure a draw as he completed his half-century, but he was trapped lbw by Hall for 57.

The visitors reached tea on 133 for five but, in the seventh over of the evening, their captain Josh Cobb perished on 28 when he edged Willey behind.

Wayne White then became James Middlebrook's first victim when the spinner's delivery went through the gate and removed his off stump.

Thakor and Henderson heroically dug in until the third from last over when the latter played on to Middlebrook to depart for a 78-ball 20.

Joseph came to the crease and he survived the final two overs as Leicestershire claimed their 10th draw of the season with Thakor ending unbeaten on 39 from 105 deliveries.
