Northamptonshire’s hopes of putting Hampshire’s batsmen under pressure were dashed as the second day of their LV= County Championship Division Two match was washed out without a ball being bowled.

Heavy overnight rain meant the outfield was sodden and, after two pitch inspections, umpires Martin Bodenham and Nigel Llong decided to abandon play at 3:30pm.

Hampshire will look to bat themselves out of a precarious position when they resume tomorrow on 42 for three with their stand-in captain and Australia international Simon Katich on four and Liam Dawson on 14. They still trail Northants by 176 runs.
