Lee Daggett took three wickets to help Northamptonshire control the first day of their LV= County Championship Division Two match against Yorkshire at Wantage Road.

The seamer returned 3-64 as second-placed Yorkshire were bowled out for 249, with James Middlebrook and David Willey each picking up two scalps.

Former Australia batsman Phil Jaques offered the most resistance, with 75 off 142 balls, but too many of his team-mates were guilty of getting out to poor shots.

Lee Daggett

Lee Daggett was Yorkshire's chief tormentor on day one at Wantage Road. The experienced seamer returned 3-64 from 24 overs to help limit the visitors to a modest 249

Yorkshire won the toss and chose to bat, but they lost Adam Lyth for six in the fifth over when he wafted Willey to gully, where Middlebrook made no mistake.

Eighteen-year-old Ollie Stone was brought into the attack in the 12th over and, with his second ball, he claimed the wicket of Joe Root, who was caught behind by 25.

Gale was given a life on 24 when David Sales put down a straightforward catch at second slip off Willey.

Jaques went on to complete his half-century off 101 deliveries by guiding Daggett through cover for four as the third-wicket partnership reached 104.

It was finally broken when Jaques was run out by a direct hit by Daggett from mid-off as he and Gale tried to run a quick single off Middlebrook.

Gale followed for 38 in the next over, caught and bowled by Daggett, and Yorkshire duly collapsed in the evening session.

Jonny Bairstow became Daggett’s second victim, lbw for 17, before Richard Pyrah launched the same bowler high into the air and was taken by Rob Newton at point for a six-ball duck.

Ballance fell cheaply on 24 when he casually chipped former Yorkshire man Middlebrook to Stone at mid-on; Adil Rashid was taken by Alex Wakely at mid-on off Middlebrook and the same fielder caught Azeem Rafiq to give Willey his second wicket.

After some good resistance by Steven Patterson, who contributed 25 not out, Yorkshire’s innings and the day’s play was brought to an end when Northants captain Andrew Hall pinned Moin Ashraf lbw.
