Stephen Peters led the way as Northamptonshire edged themselves towards Yorkshire's first-innings total on a rain-affected second day of LV= County Championship action at Wantage Road.

Opener Peters was unbeaten at the close, having contributed 74 to a score of 175 for three, which left Northants 74 runs behind their Division Two rivals when showers brought about an early finish.

Rob Newton offered support with a breezy unbeaten 40 off 61 deliveries as Yorkshire’s bowlers struggled.

Northants began their first innings at the start of the day, having bowled the White Rose out for 249 yesterday.

After making a steady start, Scotland international Kyle Coetzer fell cheaply on 31 when he cut Azeem Rafiq to former Australia batsman Phil Jaques at backward point.

This broke an opening partnership of 66 with Peters, and new batsman David Sales made just 11 before being caught at second slip off Richard Pyrah in the penultimate over before lunch.

The hosts suffered another blow in the afternoon when Adil Rashid entered the attack and accounted for Alex Wakely; Jaques took a catch at second slip to dismiss the talented right-hander for 12.

In the following over, rain forced the players off leading to a 50-minute delay and the loss of six overs.

Infuriatingly, the heavens opened again as soon as the teams returned to the field, leaving everyone running for cover once more.

Play finally resumed with another 15 minutes - and five overs - lost, and Peters completed a patient half-century from 115 balls.

Yorkshire thought they had dismissed Newton for nine but the umpires ruled he had not touched Pyrah's delivery before wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow took the catch.

Another downpour brought about tea and this time the rain would not relent, forcing an early close at 5:10pm.
