Watch highlights of a fine day for Durham at Trent Bridge

Durham gave themselves every chance of claiming their second LV= County Championship win of the season after dominating the third day against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

Thanks to Will Smith's patient 153 and solid support from the lower order, the visitors extended their first-innings total to 471, a lead of 151, before reducing their hosts to 145 for five by stumps with Mark Wood taking three of the wickets to fall.

Wood seems to have become a Trent Bridge specialist. His third championship game for Durham follows successful appearances in this fixture in 2011 and 2012, yet he has amazingly been overlooked between those matches.

Another man familiar with the conditions, Smith, was eventually dismissed after his marathon stay at the crease had been extended to almost eight and a half hours.

The former Nottinghamshire player, who moved to the north east in 2007, faced 393 deliveries before departing to the spin of Samit Patel, aided by a sharp diving catch at mid-on by Luke Fletcher.

Phil Mustard had been the only other Durham batsman to fall during the morning session, edging behind to give Stuart Broad his fourth wicket of the innings.

Nottinghamshire were then made to wait for a further 26 overs before collecting the final two wickets, as a further 115 runs were added.

Gareth Breese made 44, having not played a championship match for three years, and Wood progressed to his maiden championship fifty, surpassing the unbeaten 45 he made on the first of his previous Trent Bridge appearances.

Last man Graham Onions added 26, meaning that all 11 Durham batsmen had made it into double figures.

Alex Hales' disappointing match continued at the start of Nottinghamshire's second knock. Dismissed for just two in the first innings, he failed to score when the home side batted again, losing his middle stump to Chris Rushworth.

Wood then took centre-stage with three quick wickets to tilt the balance of the match even more firmly towards his side.

Ed Cowan was caught behind, having put on 76 with Michael Lumb for the second wicket, James Taylor was given out lbw after shuffling across his stumps and Patel fenced a short-pitched delivery to slip.

Steven Mullaney nudged Breese into the hands of Paul Collingwood just before stumps, leaving Lumb unbeaten on 77 and his side still six runs away from making Durham bat again.
