Career-best bowling figures from Nottinghamshire’s Darren Pattinson and half-centuries from Samit Patel and Mark Wagh gave the hosts a slim advantage in an action-packed first day.
Pattinson tore through the Lancashire batting with 6-30 as the visitors were bowled out for just 113 after winning the toss, with only Stuart Law and Steven Croft passing double figures.
Although Notts were then bowled out for 202, Wagh’s 55 and Patel’s cultured 74 from 71 balls put them in a position to maintain their place at the top of the LV County Championship Division One table.
Lancashire’s medium-pacer Croft claimed four victims himself as 20 wickets tumbled in the day, with Lancashire finishing the day on four without loss in their second innings, still 85 behind.
Grimsby-born Pattinson was playing in only his second first-class game for Nottinghamshire after signing at Trent Bridge in pre-season.
But after picking up his first five-wicket haul against Kent in April, he went one better with six scalps in just 14 overs.
Paul Horton had already departed leg before to Charlie Shreck in the third over of the day when Pattinson struck, removing both Mal Loye and Francois du Plessis in the following over.
Pattinson’s second lbw decision to dismiss Mark Chilton left Lancashire reeling on 16 for four before Law made the game look much easier in the 20 overs up to lunch with 12 crisp fours, mainly driven through the covers.
But his dismissal after lunch saw the last six Lancashire men depart for just 12 runs inside seven overs.
Those wickets were split between Pattinson and veteran all-rounder Mark Ealham, who claimed 3-23.
Nottinghamshire did not find the going any easier with opener Matt Wood giving Dominic Cork an early wicket, caught down the leg-side by Luke Sutton.
Will Jefferson played and missed on numerous occasions before he was eventually leg before to Croft, the first of four lbw victims for the all-rounder.
And Adam Voges was next to go after stepping across his stumps against Sajid Mahmood, before Patel and Wagh hit 57 in nine overs as the change bowlers came on.
The pair added 93 for the fourth wicket, with Wagh reaching his 50 with three successive fours off Cork before being bowled by an off-cutter.
Batsmen then came and went in quick succession, with Gary Keedy removing Chris Read, Patel and Pattinson, while Croft successfully appealed against Ealham, Graeme Swann and last man Paul Franks.
Nightwatchman Keedy survived one over from Pattinson before the close, with pitch inspectors called for the start of the second day.
