Lancashire last-wicket pair Kyle Hogg and Simon Kerrigan carried their bats through a drastically reduced third day of the LV= County Championship clash with Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge where rain and bad light restricted play to 12.5 overs.

The duo were unbeaten on 44 and 22 respectively and had put on 70 by the close as the County Champions reached 321 for nine, 29 runs short of a fourth batting bonus point having serenely collected their third.

The final day is likely to be given over to further points chasing as two days of inclement weather have left little prospect of a result unless both sides can agree on declarations and a contrived run chase.

Simon Kerrigan, right, kept Kyle Hogg company in an unbroken last-wicket stand of 70 for Lancashire against Nottinghamshire

Nottinghamshire seamer Andre Adams, who completed a five-wicket haul yesterday having claimed match figures of 10-50 in last month’s victory over the same opponents at Old Trafford, limped off the field after going over on his right ankle in delivery stride just four balls into his spell.

Indications from the home side’s management suggest the damage is not too severe.

Lancashire resumed on 272 for nine as the hosts sought a quick final breakthrough with the second new ball.

But the expected movement through the air or off the pitch failed to materialise for Harry Gurney, Andy Carter and Paul Franks as Hogg and Kerrigan proceeded at a brisk rate.

Both played with increasing confidence and left-hander Hogg was particularly comfortable, dispatching Carter to the boundary in successive overs.

Kerrigan more than doubled his aggregate total of runs for a season in which he been dismissed for ducks on three occasions and twice more failed to contribute a score as the not out batsman.
