Michael Lumb makes Middlesex pay for their profligacy in the field by taking his score to 162 on the second day of four at Trent Bridge

Michael Lumb struck 162 as Nottinghamshire took control of their LV= County Championship Division One clash with Middlesex at Trent Bridge.

After being dropped three times, Lumb went on to reach his second hundred of the season before Notts were eventually dismissed for 423, having claimed maximum batting points at Trent Bridge for the first time since July last year.

Middlesex duly slumped to 51 for three in reply, England Test captain Andrew Strauss falling to Harry Gurney for two and Andre Adams - the leading wicket-taker in the country - dismissing Sam Robson and Chris Rogers.

After Notts had resumed on 132 for one, Lumb lost his overnight partner Alex Hales for 79 in the seventh over of the day, Tim Murtagh finding the shoulder of Hales’ bat for an edge safely held by Strauss at second slip.

Murtagh missed a sitter at mid-on off Ollie Rayner when Lumb was on 86 and Strauss also shelled the left-hander twice from consecutive Neil Dexter deliveries.

The second drop helped Lumb move to three figures, his century coming from 213 balls, but Riki Wessels was run out for 41 on the stroke of lunch following an excellent diving stop from Rogers at midwicket.

The afternoon session saw Lumb and Steven Mullaney, who contributed 60, add 95 in 27 overs, with the former finally departing via a Murtagh catch at mid-off off Gareth Berg.

Mullaney, also dropped by Strauss off Rayner on 34, was eventually caught at deep midwicket off Steven Finn, but not before posting his first half-century in more than a year.

His wicket was the first of four to fall in 21 balls as Nottinghamshire chased the final batting point ahead of the 110th over, which they secured thanks to a flurry from Adams, who hit 29 from 18 balls.

With 22 overs to negotiate before the close, Strauss was quickly back in the pavilion - caught behind off Gurney - and Adams then snapped up the wickets of Robson with a defensive edge to wicketkeeper Chris Read and Rogers, whose loose drive flew to Mullaney at third slip.
