Nottinghamshire seamer Andre Adams became the first bowler this season to take 50 LV= County Championship wickets as his side’s clash with Surrey at Trent Bridge fizzled out into a draw.

After two days had been lost to rain, the hosts advanced their first innings score of 178 for five to 328 all out with the help of a 145-run stand in 34 overs between Chris Read and Adam Voges, who made 98 and 59 respectively.

Stuart Meaker shone with the ball for Surrey, picking up a five-wicket haul at the cost of 78.

In reply, Jason Roy blasted an entertaining 83 and Rory Burns, who made 79, struck a maiden championship half-century before Adams returned from a wicketless first spell to finish with 4-51 as Surrey closed on 252 for six.

Second-placed Notts’ frustration at being unable to negotiate a last-innings run-chase with Surrey - which would have made a positive result possible - was tempered by leaders Warwickshire’s defeat at Somerset.

With the top two having taken eight points from this round of matches, Warwickshire remain just one point in front at the summit, albeit with a game in hand.

Batting looked relatively straightforward in the sun as Read and Voges quickly added to a sixth-wicket stand that already stood at 94 when play began.

Australian Voges went to fifty comfortably enough but was trapped lbw by a Jon Lewis inswinger soon after.

Read continued unflustered and found an able partner in Ben Phillips as the pair added a further 74 in 15 overs.

The home skipper, who faced 135 deliveries and struck 16 fours, looked destined for a second century of the campaign, only to fall two short after being bowled by Meaker’s grubber.

Nottinghamshire still appeared set for 350, until the wickets of Phillips, Adams and Harry Gurney in quick succession put paid to such hopes.

Surrey scored at a lively pace from the outset with Burns and Zafar Ansari putting on 85 for the first wicket before the latter was yorked by Andy Carter.

Roy then took the attack to Nottinghamshire as 82 runs came in just 11 overs before Adams hit back with the wickets of Burns and Zander de Bruyn in the space of three balls.

Roy continued his 50-ball blitz and reverse swept Samit Patel for consecutive sixes, two of his five to go with eight fours, only for the spinner to have him stumped the very next ball.

Either side of the number three’s exit, Adams picked up Steven Davies and Matthew Spriegel, but Meaker, unbeaten on 29, steered the visitors past 250 for an extra batting bonus point.
