Porterfield returns for Gloucs

Will Porterfield replaces Craig Spearman for the Championship clash with Northamptonshire

Gloucestershire have recalled batsman Will Porterfield to their LV= County Championship line-up against Northamptonshire following his superb unbeaten 97 in today's NatWest Pro40 win over Essex.

Director of cricket John Bracewell threatened changes after last week's championship defeat to Derbyshire game and Porterfield gets his chance after a spell on international duty with Ireland.

Skipper Alex Gidman said Porterfield would be retained for the four-day game at the expense of Craig Spearman, who drops out.

Gidman told Gloucestershire's website: "Will is desperate to try and improve and learn new skills so his game is constantly developing.

"It was only a question of time before he came up with an innings like that. Hopefully it will give him the confidence to crack on in all forms of the game."

Richard Dawson replaces fellow spinner Vikram Banerjee in the other alteration to the team. Jon Lewis is fit to play after being rested for today's game.

Northants will have Monty Panesar available but wicketkeeper-batsman Niall O'Brien will again miss out with injury.

Youngster Ben Howgego returns to the side to open the batting and David Wigley also come in.

David Willey is omitted following his involvement with England Under-19s.
