Rain rules at Headingley

The third day of the LV County Championship clash between Roses rivals Yorkshire and Lancashire was washed out after persistent rain refused to clear at Headingley Carnegie.

Umpires John Steele and Peter Willey immediately called off the morning session after early rainfall before conducting a second inspection of the square during the lunch interval.

No further play was deemed possible as conditions showed no of imprivong and the officials returned for a further inspection at 3pm.

But rain continued to fall and the decision was made to call time on a frustrating day.

Lancashire pair Paul Horton (137 not out) and Mohammad Yousuf (93no) had hoped to build on what had looked to be a game-turning third-wicket stand of 234 on day two.

Horton jointly holds the Lancashire record for a Roses partnership, having made 258 alongside Stuart Law at the same ground last season, but was denied the chance to better that today.

With Lancashire looking to resume tomorrow on 243 for two in response to Yorkshire's earlier 395 all out, a draw now appears the most likely result.
