Vaughan takes his time

Michael Vaughan and Stuart Broad share a moment

England captain Michael Vaughan ground out an unbeaten 25 in the 30.2 overs possible on the first day of Yorkshire's LV County Championship Division One clash against leaders Nottinghamshire.

With the weather preventing play before lunch at Headingley Carnegie, the hosts found it slow going after opting to bat and lost Joe Sayers for just nine off 72 balls to Mark Ealham with the score on 33.

However, Vaughan saw them to tea without further loss at 51 for one.

Champions Sussex had their opening day at home to Surrey completely washed out, with umpires ruling out any play just before 2pm.

Warwickshire batsmen Jonathan Trott and Tim Ambrose made sure Leicestershire finished empty-handed in the 21.4 overs bowled in a second rain-curtailed day in the Division Two meeting at Edgbaston.

Trott reached an unbeaten 56 - his second half-century in three innings on his home ground this season - and Ambrose’s 46 not out is his highest score since he compiled a maiden Test century against New Zealand in Wellington last month.

After waiting until the afternoon to resume, the fifth-wicket pair extended their partnership to 95 as Warwickshire moved to 197 for four, but the match has yet to take shape with more than 120 overs lost at the halfway point.

Left-hander David Hemp scored 87 as Glamorgan reached 208 for six on the second day of another rain-affected match at Gloucestershire.

Resuming on 23 with the overnight score on 56 for two, Hemp eventually stayed for 151 balls and hit 17 fours before being caught by Marcus North off Zimbabwean Anthony Ireland shortly before stumps.

Barely 10 overs were bowled on the first day of Northamptonshire against Worcestershire at Wantage Road.

The hosts lost Alex Wakely for a duck early on courtesy of Kabir Ali after Nicky Boje opted to bat.

With the score on just one former England paceman Ali forced the 19-year-old into a rash shot and edged straight to wicketkeeper Steve Davies after facing just four balls.

Rain prompted a five-hour delay before bad light brought an early close with Rob White (10 not out) and Stephen Peters (13no) ready to resume with Northants 33 for one.
