Captain Chris Read hit an unbeaten century to help Nottinghamshire reach 356 for six at stumps on day three of their LV County Championship Division One clash with Yorkshire.
The discarded England wicketkeeper helped Notts recover from 115 for five at Headingley Carnegie to reach the close with a lead of 57 in reply to Yorkshire’s first-innings total of 299.
Read (115 not out) enjoyed a fruitful partnership with Graeme Swann and will resume with Stuart Broad who is unbeaten on 52.
Notts had begun on nought for one and they looked in further trouble after Matthew Wood (20) was caught by wicketkeeper Gerard Brophy off the bowling of Tim Bresnan.
Brophy took his second catch when Adam Voges (six) flicked a legside catch to the South African off the bowling of Morne Morkel.
There was a further success for Yorkshire in the final over before lunch as Samit Patel (10) withdrew his bat against Matthew Hoggard but the ball seamed in and hit his off-stump.
Notts were struggling on 86 for four but Mark Wagh steadied the ship with a carefully crafted 56 before he was caught by Adil Rashid at point off Darren Gough.
But Read and Swann went on the counter attack with a 136-run stand in 28 overs before the latter was trapped lbw for 68 to Anthony McGrath.
England bowler Broad showed his all-rounder capabilities and continued where Swann left off as he shared an unbroken 105-run partnership with Read which they will continue on day four.
Elsewhere in Division One Mark Ramprakash is closing in on his 99th first-class hundred at Hove where Surrey trail defending champions Sussex by 311 runs at the close on day three.
The 38-year-old reached 66 from 142 balls as Surrey reached 164 for two in reply to Sussex's 475 at stumps.
Earlier wicketkeeper-batsman Matt Prior struck seven fours in his 51 from 72 balls in front of England selector Geoff Miller before Saqlain Mushtaq wrapped up the Sussex tail to finish with 4-126 from 36 overs.
Robin Martin-Jenkins then followed up his unbeaten half-century by removing Surrey openers Jonathan Batty (17) and Scott Newman (68).
But Ramprakash and Mark Butcher (10no) will resume in the morning with a draw looking the most likely outcome after the whole of the first day was lost to rain.
In Division Two, Glamorgan completed a 114-run victory over Gloucestershire to record their first Championship victory of the season on the final day at Bristol.
Glamorgan set Gloucester 315 to win after they had declared their second innings on 178 for one thanks to Matthew Wood’s 83no and an unbeaten 72 from captain David Hemp.
Hamish Marshall hit 105 and Stephen Snell made 53 but Alex Gidman (15) was the only other Gloucester player to make double figures as they were skittled for 200.
Spinner Robert Croft (3-39) and Australia seamer Jason Gillespie (3-39) were the chief tormentors for the Welsh county.
Elsewhere, Matt Boyce scored his first century for Leicestershire as they shared a 10-12 points split as they drew with Warwickshire at Edgbaston.
The 22-year-old left-hander reached his hundred from 238 balls and batted for a minute over five hours on the final day in making 106 in only his eighth first-class innings.
Replying to the home side’s 433 for eight declared, Leicestershire were eventually dismissed for 357 as 38-year-old spin veteran Ian Salisbury claimed 5-67 on his home debut.
Northamptonshire trail Worcestershire by 71 runs with eight wickets in hand at stumps on day three of their match at Wantage Road.
Resuming on 216 for three the Pears declared on 400 for eight after Steve Davies (31), Kabir Ali (46) and Gareth Batty (37) all chipped in valuable lower-order runs while David Lucas finished with 4-68.
A patient 55 not out from captain Nicky Boje helped Northants reach 161 for two at the close and he will resume with David Sales (48no).
