Steve Harmison dealt a blow to England team-mate Michael Vaughan’s hopes of a recall to the national team in time for this summer’s Ashes in Yorkshire’s LV= County Championship match at champions Durham.

Vaughan has not played a Test since stepping down from the England captaincy during last summer’s visit of South Africa, but has maintained his desire the break back into the national team set-up.

But his first chance to make runs was undermined by a controversial dismissal by Harmison.

Harmison, another England hopeful this summer, produced a brutish delivery which Vaughan was judged to have fended through to wicketkeeper Phil Mustard.

An unhappy Vaughan stood his ground after being given out, but had to go after making just 24.

Harmison also took the wicket of Jacques Rudolph, for 51, while Gerard Brophy made 75 and Tim Bresnan 40 as Yorkshire closed on 264 for six. Earlier, Durham were bowled out for 362 with Mustard left stranded on 94.

Sussex all-rounder Luke Wright mopped up Lancashire’s tail in taking figures of 5-80, but it did not prevent the Red Rose county from taking a slender first-innings lead.

Lancashire were bowled out for 299 midway through the afternoon session, to take a lead of just 10 runs.

In-form paceman James Anderson, who took six first innings wickets, then struck twice before tea and Gary Keedy three times after the interval - including the wicket of England’s Matt Prior for a duck - to leave Sussex 148 for five at the close. Ed Joyce, another of Keedy’s victims, made 55.

Warwickshire lost early wickets in their pursuit of Hampshire’s first innings total of 379 at Edgbaston, but Jim Troughton’s unbeaten century steadied the ship.

The hosts lost openers Tony Frost (four) and Darren Maddy (eight) cheaply to at one stage be 12 for two.

And while Jonathan Trott (22) and Ian Bell (29) also fell before the close, Troughton (100 not out) and Tim Ambrose (47 not out) shared an unbeaten stand of 104 to guide their side to 224 for four.

Nottinghamshire enforced the follow-on and then took three early second-innings wickets to reduce Worcestershire to 24 for three - still 127 runs short of Notts’ first-innings total at Trent Bridge.

Worcestershire were all out for 354 first time round, despite 126 from Steve Davies, Stuart Broad finishing with five wickets for 79.

And the visitors’ woes continued with Daryl Mitchell (nine), Stephen Moore (four) and Chris Whelan (nought) all falling before the close, Andre Adams taking two wickets.

In Division Two, Essex wrapped up their first win of the season by seven wickets against Gloucestershire.

Matt Walker guided them to their modest target of 98 with an unbeaten 48.

Kent were bowled out for 417 after centuries from Geraint Jones (103) and Martin van Jaarsveld (107) to give them a 62-run first-innings lead against Northamptonshire.

In reply Northants were 148 for two, Robert White contributing 72 and Stephen Peters unbeaten on 62.

Surrey closed on 213 for three as they set about wiping out their first-innings deficit of 143 against Derbyshire.

Scott Newman cracked 17 fours on his way to 128.

Mark Wallace top scored with 128 as Glamorgan were finally bowled out for 505 against Middlesex at Lord’s.

Australia opener Phil Hughes hit a century of his own on debut, finishing the day unbeaten on 100, with Neil Dexter still there on 43, as the hosts closed on were 174 for one in reply.
