Hampshire secured their LV= County Championship Division One status after completing a nail-biting 130-run victory over relegation-threatened Kent with just minutes to spare.

Kent can still avoid the drop but they need a bonus point-laden victory over title challengers Yorkshire next week and hope Hampshire to beat Warwickshire.

The clash of the relegation rivals went right to the wire at Canterbury before James Tomlinson, bowling with the second new ball, had tailender Simon Cook caught by Jimmy Adams at short-leg.

Hampshire this morning declared their second inning on 355 for nine, leaving James Vince unbeaten on 68, and they made swift inroads into the Kent batting as Dominic Cork and Danny Briggs took four wickets apiece.

Opener Sam Northeast provided some stern resistance with 71, while Darren Stevens hit 45 and Alex Blake 46 as Kent clung on to see out the minimum number of overs.

But there was still time left on the clock and Tomlinson wrapped up a dramatic victory for Hampshire to leave Kent on the brink of joining Essex in Division Two.

Essex, who had their relegation confirmed earlier in the week, drew with Durham at Chelmsford.

Rory Hamilton-Brown

Rory Hamilton-Brown becomes the third of James Harris' four victims today, but Surrey held on to draw against Glamorgan

Ben Harmison scored 96 for the visitors before holing out to the part-time spin of Alastair Cook. Set an improbable 459 for victory, Durham closed on 234 for six soon after.

Sussex were confirmed as Division Two champions after Glamorgan were forced to settle for a draw with Surrey at the Brit Insurance Oval.

Glamorgan and Worcestershire, who completed a 111-run victory over Middlesex today, will go into the final round of fixtures next weekend competing for one promotion place.

Glamorgan had given themselves a golden chance of victory when James Harris claimed four quick wickets as Surrey, who started their second innings with a lead of 105, were reduced to 21 for five.

But Chris Schofield rescued Surrey with 90, which included 11 fours. Schofield, who scored 63 in the first innings, put on 124 with Gary Wilson and 54 alongside Gareth Batty.

Glamorgan welcome Derbyshire next week while Worcestershire host Sussex on the back of a commanding final-day performance at Lord’s.

Middlesex were set a target of 178 after Gareth Andrew’s 73 had boosted Worcestershire’s second-innings total to 256.

But the hosts collapsed for 66, with only three batsmen reaching double figures as Bangladesh left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan claimed career-best figures of 7-32.

Leicestershire completed a 329-run destruction of Gloucestershire at Grace Road, whose promotion hopes were extinguished.

The visitors began the day on on 78 for five and were bowled out for 158 with Nathan Buck, Claude Henderson and Jigar Naik claiming three wickets each.
