Rain across the country put paid to any play on day two in seven of the eight ongoing LV= County Championship matches.

In the 90 minutes of action that was possible at New Road, Middlesex made solid progress after dismissing Worcestershire for 323.

When play finally got under way at 4:30pm, the hosts could only add another 28 to their overnight 295 for eight as Toby Roland-Jones removed Chris Russell to complete figures of 5-72 and Tim Murtagh accounted for Alan Richardson, leaving captain Daryl Mitchell stranded on 133.

Openers Chris Rogers and Sam Robson then reached 17 and 27 not out to take Middlesex to 49 without loss in 13 overs.

Division One leaders Warwickshire will start tomorrow on 298 for five against title rivals Nottinghamshire after another washout at Edgbaston, while Aigburth failed an inspection to leave struggling Lancashire waiting to add to their 221 for six against resurgent Durham.

There was no play at Taunton where Somerset were 42 for two in reply to Surrey’s 317 all out following Kevin Pietersen’s century yesterday.

In Division Two, showers left leaders Derbyshire still sweating on 28 for three after bowling Essex out for 245 and the elements also halted Yorkshire’s promotion charge at Scarborough to leave the third-placed White Rose waiting to resume on 61 for two in response to Gloucestershire’s 215.

Kent’s Brendan Nash and Niall O’Brien of Northamptonshire will have to wait to build on unbeaten centuries against Leicestershire and Glamorgan respectively after the wet weather left Grace Road and the SWALEC Stadium unplayable.
