Ballance keeps Yorkshire stable
Gary Ballance and Adil Rashid led the fightback for Yorkshire as Somerset failed to take a wicket in the afternoon session of their LV= County Championship Division One game at Headingley.
Having won the toss and elected to bat, the White Rose county had been reduced to 75 for four in the morning but Ballance and Rashid put on an unbroken 119 before tea to take the Yorkshire score onto 194 for four.
Left-hander Ballance was unbeaten on 62 at the break, while all-rounder Rashid had 45 to his name.
In today’s other game, Lancashire’s Luke Procter ran through the Essex top-order after lunch as the visitors slumped to 137 for six at tea on day one of their Division Two clash.
Having reached 72 for two at lunch, Essex lost England captain Alastair Cook four balls into the afternoon session when he was caught behind off seamer Procter.
The 24-year-old then picked up the wickets of Mark Pettini and Jaik Mickleburgh for good measure to leave the away side reeling on 77 for five.
James Foster and Graham Napier launched something of a comeback with a 54-run partnership for the sixth wicket, before captain Foster was caught behind off Wayne White for 24.
Napier - already with three half-centuries to his name this season - was unbeaten on 32 at the break, with Tim Phillips four not out at the other end.
