Rain cuts Fletcher short
Luke Fletcher struck twice in an over on a rain-ruined opening day of the LV= County Championship Division One match between Somerset and Nottinghamshire at Taunton.
Only half an hour’s play was possible after the visitors won the toss and elected to field in heavily overcast conditions.
But it was enough for Fletcher to remove openers Arul Suppiah and Marcus Trescothick, both lbw to seaming deliveries as Somerset struggled to 20 for two off eight overs.
The damage was done in the fourth over. With six runs on the board, Suppiah was beaten by a ball that nipped back and departed for two.
Nick Compton quickly got off strike with a leg-bye, but then Fletcher struck a bigger blow by pinning prolific Somerset captain Trescothick in front for four.
James Hildreth and Compton managed a four each before the rain came, forcing the players off at 11.30am.
Without ever being heavy, the rain continued throughout the day and umpires Richard Illingworth and Martin Bodenham finally abandoned play at 5.20pm.
