Arun Harinath compiled a second century in as many LV= County Championship games as Surrey's match with Somerset petered out into a tame draw at Taunton.

Harinath finished unbeaten on 105 as the visitors settled for nine points by batting all day from an overnight 58 without loss to 305 for five declared.

Kevin Pietersen added 58 before becoming a maiden first-class wicket for occasional off-spinner Chris Jones, who was brought on as Somerset tried to tempt Surrey into making a game of it with some declaration bowling.

The result went further towards preserving Surrey's Division One status, while Somerset took eight points to leave their hopes of a first title hanging by a thread.

With Pietersen unbeaten on 28 at lunch, which was taken with Surrey 153 for two and leading by 176, there was just a chance that they would make quick enough runs for Gareth Batty to declare and give his side a chance of bowling Somerset out.

When Pietersen added 38 to his score against the bowling of Jones and James Hildreth after the interval that possibility seemed to increase.

Yet after his departure, to a catch by Alex Barrow, Surrey batted carefully, Somerset reverted to their proper bowlers and Harinath scored a 179-ball century.

Rory Burns had earlier hit nine boundaries in his 60, but as the afternoon wore on there were more strange developments as Barrow took over behind the stumps and Jos Buttler entered the bowling attack.

The match duly drifted towards the tamest of climaxes and the players shook hands at 4:50pm.

The most interesting passage of play had come before lunch with Pietersen facing the left-arm spin of George Dockrell.

While the young Somerset bowler had moments of success, it was a battle won hands down by Pietersen, who launched him for a straight six before adding three more maximums against the friendlier attack at the start of the afternoon session.
