Only 8.1 overs of play were possible on the opening day of the LV= County Championship Division One match between Somerset and Nottinghamshire at Taunton.

Rain delayed the start until 4:40pm when play began with the aim of squeezing in 29 overs. Somerset won the toss and not surprisingly decided to field in excellent bowling conditions.

By the time the showers returned, Nottinghamshire had progressed to 18 for one and will have been relieved not to lose more wickets.

Riki Wessels played and missed at the first two deliveries of the game from Peter Trego, the first resulting in a loud appeal which was rejected by umpire Steve O’Shaughnessy.

Trego and Steve Kirby continued to beat the bat with regularity as Alex Hales and Wessels found it tough to cope with extravagant swing and seam movement.

The breakthrough came with the first ball of the ninth over when Wessels, on six, edged Trego to second slip where Somerset captain Marcus Trescothick took a comfortable catch.

The wicket took all-rounder Trego’s tally in the championship this season to 41. Only Andre Adams of Nottinghamshire and Tim Murtagh of Middlesex have taken more in Division One.

As Wessels made his way back to the pavilion, the rain started to fall again and he was followed off by the rest of the players.
