Alfonso Thomas took two wickets for Somerset on another rain-ruined day of the potentially important LV= County Championship Division One clash against Nottinghamshire at Taunton.

Only 15.4 overs were possible following just 8.1 on the first day and the visitors progressed from 18 for one to 48 for three, losing Michael Lumb for 16 and Alex Hales for 12.

Lumb looked less than convinced when Thomas had an lbw appeal upheld to make it 39 for two after the start had been delayed until 2.15pm.

Yet Hales could have no complaints after a flat-footed drive off the same bowler saw him safely pouched at second slip by Marcus Trescothick with the total on 42.

Rain intervened at 3:05pm and, although play restarted at 5:25pm, only a further 26 deliveries were possible before another shower brought an end to proceedings.

It was a nightmare day for the groundstaff, forever taking off and replacing the covers, and equally frustrating for players, umpires and spectators.

Thomas finished the day with 2-15 from 7.5 overs, while Nottinghamshire batsman James Taylor, fresh from his impressive Test bow at Headingley Carnegie, showed studied defence to be unbeaten on three off 26 balls at stumps.
