Somerset turn the screw

Charl Willoughby

Somerset's Charl Willoughby claimed three Kent wickets

Somerset attempted to put their LV County Championship Division One game beyond Kent after choosing not to enforce the follow-on at Taunton.

Opener Justin Langer (65 not out) stretched the home side’s lead to 348 at the close of play, on 129 for five in their second innings.

Three wickets apiece from Steffan Jones, Alfonso Thomas, and South Africa's Charl Willoughby ensured that the visitors fell 19 runs short of the 227 required for them to avoid the follow-on.

A battling 70 from John Crawley could not help Hampshire slumping to 131 for five in their rain-affected match, chasing Sussex’s 426 all out at Arundel.

The introduction of Ollie Raynor proved to be the breakthrough as he removed Crawley and Sean Ervine (17), both caught by Chris Adams.

Earlier, Murray Goodwin added 10 runs to the 174 he made by lunch before falling to Liam Dawson. Carl Hopkinson recorded his maiden first-class century to rescue his side from the verge of disaster after they collapsed to 25 for four on day one.

Durham surpassed Surrey’s total of 220 at Guildford thanks to an unbeaten century from Will Smith.

The 26-year-old’s unbeaten 126 put the visitors on 259 at the close of play, helped by wicketkeeper Phil Mustard’s 62 not out in a sixth-wicket partnership of 131.

Bad light stopped play early between Warwickshire and Middlesex at Uxbridge, with the home side grateful on 70 for three and Owais Shah unbeaten on 25.

Warwickshire had posted an impressive 393 - to give the Bears the advantage in the Division Two top of the table clash.

Worcestershire looked on course to set an impressive total against Glamorgan on the first day of their match at New Road.

Stephen Moore (57) and Daryl Mitchell (78) provided a strong foundation for the Worcestershire innings, and they were followed by Vikram Solanki (69), and an unbeaten 58 from Ben Smith in the total of 307 for four.

Their impressive total will leave Glamorgan captain David Hemp rueing his choice to field after winning the toss.

More bad light meant an early finish at Northampton as Northamptonshire attempted a mammoth task in replying to Derbyshire's 485 for seven declared.

Derbyshire batsmen Jonathan Clare (129no) and Graham Wagg (108) ensured the away side kicked on, while Paul Borrington, Wavell Hinds and Greg Smith also weighed in with half-centuries.

In reply Northamptonshire made 48 without loss, thanks to Stephen Peters (24) and Niall O’Brien (23).
