A dogged sixth-wicket stand of 123 in 49 overs between Zander de Bruyn and Gary Wilson helped Surrey recover some composure against Nottinghamshire in their LV= County Championship Division One clash at the Kia Oval to end the day 242 for nine.

De Bruyn moved steadily to 71 and Wilson likewise to 68, slightly easing the hosts’ relagation concerns and slowing their title-chasing opponents’ pursuit of maximum bowling points.

Harry Gurney picked up three early wickets, including that of Kevin Pietersen caught behind for 15, as Surrey slipped to 52 for four after choosing to bat.

Rory Burns glanced the second ball of the day for four but Zafar Ansari, on the drive, edged to Graeme White at third slip off Ben Phillips.

Burns then clipped a Gurney delivery straight to short midwicket to depart for 23 and bring Pietersen to the crease.

Gary Wilson & Chris Read

Gary Wilson drives during his first LV= County Championship fifty in two years that helped to earn Surrey one batting bonus point

The introduction of spin, in the shape of White, prompted Pietersen to despatch the 25-year-old slow left-armer back over his head for four. But Gurney then got a ball to nip back and trim the top of Arun Harinath’s stumps.

Pietersen brought the 50 up for Surrey with an imperious straight drive off Gurney, who struck next ball when the right-hander was brilliantly caught in front of first slip by wicketkeeper Chris Read.

Jason Roy got off the mark with a cut four off White but shortly after lunch the 22-year-old, attempting to launch White out of the ground, was bowled for 20 to make it 83 for five.

Having lifted White for a straight six, de Bruyn settled into playing watchfully as did Wilson who cut Phillips for four to bring up the fifty partnership.

Following tea de Bruyn moved to a 126-ball half-century and Wilson soon celebrated his first championship fifty for two years, which came in 144 deliveries and included five fours.

De Bruyn, sweeping, went leg before to White. But the first over with the second new ball saw Wilson cut and cover-drive Phillips to the boundary.

Wilson cut Luke Fletcher for four only to be trapped lbw on the back foot. Phillips then had Gareth Batty caught behind off an outswinging delivery.

Murali Kartik, playing a leaden-footed cut, was snapped up at first slip off Phillips. But Stuart Meaker, who was presented with his county cap during the lunch interval, and Tim Linley saw their side through to the close.
