Zander de Bruyn and Gary Wilson overcame a turning pitch to help Surrey set Nottinghamshire a last-day victory target of 347 in the LV= County Championship Division One clash at the Kia Oval.

With seven of the 10 wickets to fall on day three being shared by the spin duo of Graeme White and Sam Wood - 4-97 and 3-64 respectively - the stage would now appear to be set for Murali Kartik and Gareth Batty to spin the hosts to victory.

Surrey, who began the day with a first-innings lead of 42, lost Zafar Ansari in the fourth over when Luke Fletcher lured the 20-year-old left-hander into playing an indeterminate shot.

Rory Burns and Arun Harinath then added 40 for the second wicket before White dislodged Harinath’s leg bail with a delivery that turned sharply.

Kevin Pietersen announced himself by dispatching his fourth ball to the long-on boundary and repeated the shot five overs later off Fletcher.

Gary Wilson

Gary Wilson strikes 57 in a vital partnership of 90 for the sixth wicket with Zander de Bruyn to make Surrey favourites going into day four

With White striking either side of lunch to bowl Burns through the gate for 44 and have Pietersen hole out to long-off for 22, Surrey were in danger of throwing away their advantage.

But de Bruyn and Jason Roy’s fifth-wicket stand of 72 in 19 overs ensured the hosts kept their noses in front.

Roy mixed vigilance with calculated aggression to make 41 off 50 balls, while de Bruyn capitalised on the pace of Ben Phillips to guide the ball down to the rope at third man.

Roy became Wood’s maiden first-class victim when he clipped the 19-year-old off-spinner to short midwicket.

Five overs later, de Bruyn cut White for four before moving to his second fifty of the match, which came from 115 deliveries. After tea he lifted White straight down the ground for six.

Wilson got in on the act by picking Wood up over long-off for a maximum, which he followed up with a four through cover.

The wicketkeeper brought up his half-century from 82 deliveries, but three balls later White trapped de Bruyn leg before for 78 to bring the curtain down on a vital sixth-wicket stand of 90 in 25 overs.

On 57, Wilson chipped Wood to short midwicket and Stuart Meaker went caught behind off Wood before Nottinghamshire elected to take the second new ball.

It brought them the wickets of Batty and Kartik, who was brilliantly caught at deep midwicket off Phillips.

Notts opened with nightwatchman Harry Gurney, who played out a maiden before the close.
