Durham moved into a good position to force an LV= County Championship Division One victory against Surrey after a rain-shortened third day at the Kia Oval.

At 164 for six, Surrey lead by just 115 with only four second-innings wickets in hand.

Leg-spinner Scott Borthwick did most of the damage with 3-41 after Callum Thorp and Mark Wood had both taken wickets with the new ball, although Durham captain Paul Collingwood also chipped in with the vital scalp of Vikram Solanki after Surrey had conceded a deficit of 49 on first innings.

Day three began with Durham adding just seven more runs to their overnight 279 for nine, with last man Ryan Buckley lbw to Gareth Batty for six in a total of 286 which owed much to Dale Benkenstein's 74 not out. Batty's success gave him final figures of 5-80.

Surrey, bowled out for 237 first time with the 19-year-old off-spinner Buckley taking 5-86 on his first-class debut, soon lost Jason Roy for four, bowled by an off-cutter from Thorp that found the gap between bat and pad.

Arun Harinath was leg before to Wood for 11 to leave Surrey struggling at 37 for two, but Rory Burns played some attractive strokes in his 38 until he was trapped lbw trying to whip Borthwick through mid-on just before lunch.

Solanki's hour-long innings of 20 was ended when the canny Collingwood won an lbw verdict with his medium-paced cutters and Durham could have turned the screw far tighter had Will Smith managed to hold on to a tough chance at short-leg, off Buckley, when Zander de Bruyn had made only seven and the total was 122.

Meanwhile, Steven Davies was settling in well against the spinners on a pitch offering some turn, twice whipping balls from Buckley wide of mid-on for four and also pulling Borthwick to the boundary when he dropped short.

Half an hour before tea, however, Borthwick trapped de Bruyn lbw for 20 with a googly that also kept low and Davies, on 46 and seeking the boundary which would have taken him to a deserved half-century, pulled a long-hop from Borthwick straight to Mark Stoneman on the deep midwicket rope.

Gary Wilson, joined by Batty, saw Surrey through to tea, but only one ball was possible after the interval before rain arrived to wash out the rest of the third day's play and also ruin the prospect of a fascinating last session.
