Mushtaq puts Sussex in charge
Mushtaq Ahmed extended his season's tally to 73 wickets with four more victims as defending champions Sussex tightened their grip over LV County Championship leaders Yorkshire at Hove.
Yorkshire were reduced to 188 for seven by the close of the second day - still needing a further 260 to avoid following on - after Sussex amassed their highest ever total against them.
Andrew Hodd became Sussex's second centurion of the innings by stroking his maiden Championship 100 in the hosts' first innings score of 597 for eight declared.
Yorkshire's shaky start saw Michael Vaughan and acting captain Anthony McGrath dismissed before tea.
England Test captain Vaughan sliced an attempted drive to be caught in the gully off left-armer Jason Lewry for only eight, before McGrath (31) became Mushtaq's 70th victim of the summer.
McGrath, who led his side out at the start of play having missed the final 20 overs of the first day after fainting at mid-off, was caught at short leg pushing forward to the evergreen former Pakistani leg spinner.
Mushtaq struck again by dismissing his former Pakistani team-mate Inzamam-ul-Haq (eight) who has now failed to make double figures in four innings since joining Yorkshire on a short-term contract.
Inzamam got an edge pushing forward and skipper Chris Adams took a sharp catch at first slip after the ball deflected off wicketkeeper Hodd.
Yorkshire's problems increased when medium-pacer Robin Martin-Jenkins later sent back Jacques Rudolph and Gerard Brophy in successive overs to reduce the visitors to 122 for five.
Rudolph, after adding 31 in nine overs for the fourth wicket with opener Andrew Gale, edged a delivery outside off-stump low to slip and Brophy went for a duck by driving to cover.
Gale compiled a careful first-half century of the season from 109 balls with six fours, but he came down the pitch to give Mushtaq his third wicket by edging a second slip catch to Adams.
Mushtaq capped another dominant day for the defending champions by having Tim Bresnan caught at backward point off a sliced drive.
Sussex, resuming on 386 for five with Hodd 37, pressed on until 50 minutes after lunch and they finally called a halt when Hodd's innings came to an end.
The 23-year-old, who hit 12 boundaries in his 219-ball vigil, fell to a running catch by Matthew Hoggard at deep mid-wicket to give leg-spinner Adil Rashid his third victim.
Hodd had added 97 in 26 overs for the eighth wicket with former Pakistani Test off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq, whose 57 not out was his highest score for Sussex.
Yorkshire were made to suffer as Hodd first extended his overnight sixth wicket stand with Martin-Jenkins to 79 before Rana Naved-ul-Hasan joined him to add 90 in 16 overs.
Martin-Jenkins missed out on his first Championship half-century of the season by a single, being caught at slip off Hoggard.
Naved (46) helped ease the hosts past 500 before spooning a slower ball from Bresnan to mid-off.
Sussex's previous highest score in 187 Championship meetings against Yorkshire was 566 at Sheffield in 1937.
And Hodd steered them to a new milestone by square driving pace bowler Ajmal Shahzad handsomely for four.
Hodd, whose maiden first-class century arrived at Hove in July against India, safely moved to his 100 after spending 32 minutes in the 90s.
