Ed Joyce had a memorable day in his first LV= County Championship Division One match as Sussex’s new captain as he watched his bowlers dismiss Worcestershire for 162.

Although Michael Yardy will still lead the side on Friends Life t20 finals day in Cardiff later this month, Joyce has replaced the all-rounder as skipper for the rest of the campaign, and enjoyed a near-perfect start to his tenure.

Steve Magoffin was the most successful Sussex bowler, with 4-34, and the visitors rounded off a successful day by closing on 22 without loss.

Play did not start until 2:15pm because of rain and the Sussex bowlers, especially Magoffin, appeared anxious to make up for lost time on a bouncy pitch.

Steve Magoffin led the way with four wickets as Sussex skittled Worcestershire for just 162 before reaching 22 without loss in reply

Worcestershire lost their first wicket in the eighth over when the dangerous Phil Hughes was surprised by a slightly short delivery from Magoffin and fended to second slip, where Yardy took an excellent catch high to his left.

Vikram Solanki was then bowled by Magoffin for one and Daryl Mitchell edged Amjad Khan to Joyce, who took a good catch low to his left at third slip.

Sussex should have had a fourth wicket with the first ball after tea, but Luke Wells - stationed at first slip - dropped James Cameron off James Anyon.

The mistake did not prove expensive as Anyon bowled Cameron two deliveries later.

Worcestershire’s batsmen continued to struggle with the seam movement, and also the bounce gained by the fast bowlers.

Matthew Pardoe was the fifth man out when Yardy took another fine catch at second slip off Anyon.

Gareth Andrew then gave a simple catch to wicketkeeper Ben Brown off Amjad and Worcestershire were soon in disarray on 107 for seven when Ben Scott flicked Magoffin straight to Anyon at midwicket.

Moeen Ali top-scored with 43 before pulling Magoffin straight to Luke Wright, who was just in front of square.

Jack Shantry was caught behind to give Amjad his third wicket and, although Richard Jones, who finished unbeaten on 30, was dropped at long-off, Alan Richardson was bowled by Monty Panesar soon afterwards to bring an end to the innings.
