Watch highlights from Edgbaston as Warwickshire take on Durham

Durham's Scott Borthwick laid on an early birthday celebration when making his first century in the LV= County Championship against Warwickshire's title-winning battery of seamers at Edgbaston.

The all-rounder, 23 on Friday, came to the rescue with his side brought to their knees by Keith Barker and Chris Woakes, who returned for the Division One champions with a cluster of wickets in addition to an earlier stand of 92.

Durham were reeling on 50 for six when Borthwick joined Paul Collingwood; while his captain dug in for three hours, making 74 from 149 balls, Borthwick went on to make 101 in a remarkable recovery to 284.

They took the sting out of an impressive attack with sensible batting, both disciplined and positive, in putting on 153 in 38 overs, a new seventh-wicket record for this fixture.

Borthwick was on 40 when given a let-off by the usually secure Rikki Clarke, but there was no escape for Collingwood when Warwickshire's leading slip catcher held on to an edge off Woakes.

Clarke was the bowler when Borthwick, who made one previous hundred against Sri Lanka A in 2011, was caught at first slip after hitting 15 fours from 130 balls.

Yet there was more resistance to come from Callum Thorp and Chris Rushworth, who made 27 and 18 not out respectively before the last wicket fell.

Warwickshire, with a smaller-than-expected lead of 61, then made six without loss in two overs as a protracted day's play ended with the floodlights on at 7:20pm

Durham's front-line batting withered as the home side displayed their firepower with Barker claiming 3-15 in 10 overs in an impressive new-ball spell on his return from a hamstring injury.

Chris Wright weighed in with one wicket and when he was finished, Woakes - having been rested from the opening draw with Derbyshire - delivered a spell of 2-30.

Barker and Wright whistled out the first three, all caught behind by Tim Ambrose; having survived the initial troubles, taking 34 balls to get off the mark, Keaton Jennings eventually edged the former to Clarke at second slip.

Warwickshire occasionally strayed off their full-length attacking line as Ben Stokes made an enterprising 33 but Woakes bowled him with a good ball from round the wicket and then had Phil Mustard leg before for a duck.

Though unable to sustain their momentum, Warwickshire's seamers proved that with a new ball there is perhaps more in the pitch than Durham got out of it after choosing to bowl first.

Graham Onions, with 4-86, finally claimed the last three wickets as Warwickshire's first innings ended on 345 but not before Woakes, unbeaten with 52 after being dropped on 20, and Barker, with 45, had claimed a third batting point.
