Watch highlights of day two as Warwickshire face Yorkshire at Edgbaston

The quality and resilience of Yorkshire’s cricket in dominating Warwickshire at Edgbaston had the hallmark of potential contenders for this season's Division One crown in the LV= County Championship.

Having dismissed the injury-hit champions for 128, they overcame all obstacles as half-centuries from Gary Ballance and Adil Rashid helped them into a lead of 190 on closing the second day at 318 for seven.

Tim Bresnan's arrival from Lord's added to the feelgood factor; he began the day with his release from the England squad and finished it with 38 in a stand of 75 with Rashid, who followed his century against Somerset by making a fluent 68 not out.

A lesser side could have been sidetracked when Boyd Rankin ended an opening partnership of 77 with wickets in successive overs and again when Jeetan Patel's persistent off-spin secured a return of 3-37 in 20 overs.

Rankin's shirt displayed neither name nor number but at 6ft 8in he can never become anonymous.

The towering pace bowler has given up representing Ireland partly to avoid injuries such as the workload-related foot problem which restricted him to six games in last year's successful campaign.

A flare-up in the winter then delayed his return to county duty until the fourth championship match of a new season.

Five wickets against Sussex and Middlesex represented a decent return on flat surfaces but there was some bounce today, and he temporarily knocked Yorkshire out of their stride.

Adam Lyth, who struck 43, was mostly untroubled until cutting his second ball to point, where Tom Milnes atoned for an earlier drop and the less expansive Joe Sayers was caught behind after hitting only two fours in two-and-a-quarter hours for 24.

Andrew Gale stood up to Rankin with two sixes - one of which Chris Woakes caught in stepping beyond the rope - but, having given one other chance in making 40, Yorkshire's captain is still without a fifty this season.

It was Patel's off-spin that revived Warwickshire for a time. Phil Jaques edged the first ball of the New Zealander's second spell to wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose and Gale was a victim of Rikki Clarke's sharp reaction in holding a chance low to his left at second slip.

After a quiet start, Ballance targeted Rankin for four of his 10 boundaries and put on 78 with Rashid before becoming a third victim for Patel.

When Andrew Hodd was lbw in Woakes' first over with the new ball, Rashid moved to his fifty from 70 deliveries but Bresnan was out in the penultimate over, caught down the leg-side off Rankin.
