Warwickshire and Derbyshire suffered further irritation as continued poor weather at Edgbaston ensured only 24 overs were possible on day three of their season-opening LV= County Championship match, which now appears certain to end in a draw.

There was no play yesterday at the home of the reigning Division One champions, with rain and bad light responsible for the complete lack of action.

Today, the players did finally make it on to the field at 3:30pm, but found themselves heading back to the dressing rooms inside half an hour as the heavens opened again.

Three further short passages of play in the evening, the latter two spanning a combined total of seven overs, gave Warwickshire - 14 for none overnight in reply to Derbyshire’s first-innings 226 - the opportunity to take their score to 90 without loss.

Yet with more inclement weather forecast for the second half of the final day, a positive result surely cannot be achieved by either team.

Both will hope to at least get the chance to add bonus points to their respective tallies. Warwickshire currently have three following their efforts with the ball, while Derbyshire - on their return to the top-flight - have one.

In the brief exchanges today, the visitors posed few problems for Varun Chopra or Ian Westwood, who made it to 48 and 31.

The former proved typically strong through the off side, timing a couple of drives sweetly, although he did survive a let-off on 19 when an edge off Tim Groenewald fell just short of Wes Durston at first slip.
