Predictable draw in soggy Birmingham
Warwickshire and Derbyshire each added a bonus point at Edgbaston on the final morning of the only Division One match that failed to produce an outright winner in the opening round of LV= County Championship fixtures.
With more than 200 overs lost over the four days, the rain-wrecked meeting of last season’s two divisional champions drifted to a draw as the clouds rolled in again.
Warwickshire cruised along in a stand of 139 by openers Varun Chopra and Ian Westwood but then lost wickets before securing a batting point when a boundary from Laurie Evans took them to 201 for four at lunch.
With rain returning thereafter, it was no surprise when play was abandoned shortly before 4pm.
Tim Groenewald claimed a landmark wicket for the visitors when he had Westwood caught at point – the scalp was Derbyshire’s first in the top-flight since September 2000.
Wes Durston then struck twice with his off-spin, either side of Chopra being caught at the wicket for 76 off slow left-armer Chesney Hughes.
