Spinner Jeetan Patel took 10 wickets in the match as Warwickshire completed an LV= County Championship Division One double over Sussex

Jeetan Patel continued his hounding of Sussex as Warwickshire stepped up their challenge for the LV= County Championship title with an innings-and-43-run victory at Edgbaston.

A match return of 10-163 gave the New Zealand off-spinner a total of 15 wickets in a back-to-back double over Sussex in the space of three weeks.

Yet he only played in this match because of the complexity of the visa application system which has so far delayed the arrival of West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul to fill in the overseas position.

Starting the last day 191 behind at 71 for two in their second innings, Sussex subsided for 219 despite half-centuries by Ed Joyce and Michael Yardy.

Chris Woakes claimed his 200th first-class wicket in 56 matches when Joyce was lbw for 74 and the England limited-overs seamer also accounted for Andrew Hodd with an edge to third slip.

Patel then speeded up Warwickshire’s progress to a fifth win in six games. Sussex were no better equipped to deal with him on a turning surface than they were when he took 5-96 in the eight-wicket success at Arundel at the beginning of the month.

A return of 4-52 in the first innings was followed by a decisive spell of 6-111 from the new pavilion end as Sussex – who have not won a championship game at Edgbaston since 1982 - crumbled around captain Yardy.

Taking over the lead role when Joyce departed after hitting 10 fours, Yardy would have benefited from time in the middle in compiling his first championship 50 since depression forced him to pull out of the England team at the World Cup earlier in the year.

Batting conservatively until hitting a couple of sixes, he stayed for three hours to make an unbeaten 62 but it was mostly a lone vigil as Patel turned up the pressure.

Having struck in his third over of the day when Murray Goodwin heaved a catch to midwicket, he later dismissed Ollie Rayner and William Adkin, both snapped up in the close ring when prodding forward.

Rana Naved-ul-Hasan hoisted Patel to deep midwicket, Rikki Clarke nipped in to remove Monty Panesar and Patel had the final word when James Anyon shouldered arms after a stubborn last-wicket stand.

Warwickshire are now undisputedly in a three-way battle for the championship and in their next match they will take on fellow contenders Lancashire, starting on August 1, at Liverpool.

They will go into this crucial fixture without two batsmen who are nursing fractures. With Darren Maddy already ruled out, Ian Westwood broke the little finger in his right hand when taking a catch against Sussex on Friday.
