Weather means frustration at Taunton
Rain ensured only 10.4 overs were possible on the opening day of Somerset’s LV= County Championship match with Division One leaders Warwickshire at Taunton.
After a delayed start, play got under way at 11:45pm with Somerset having elected to field under heavily overcast skies.
Gemaal Hussain and Peter Trego shared the new ball for an under-strength home bowling attack deprived of Steve Kirby and Adam Dibble by injury, plus George Dockrell and twins Craig and Jamie Overton, who are away on under-19 international duty.
Warwickshire, themselves without Jonathan Trott, Ian Bell and Will Porterfield because of England and Ireland commitments, made a steady start and had reached 27 when the first wicket fell.
Ian Westwood, on 10, edged Trego to second slip where Jos Buttler held the catch. Before a new batsman could take his place, however, rain started falling heavily enough for the players to be taken off - prompting an early lunch.
Umpires Tim Robinson and Martin Saggers eventually abandoned play for the day at 4:25pm as inclement weather continued to undermine efforts to re-commence the action.
