Jim Troughton and Chris Woakes struck centuries to rescue Warwickshire on the second day of their LV= County Championship Division One match against Somerset at Taunton.

Despite an impressive 93 from Varun Chopra, the leaders looked in trouble at 162 for six before Troughton, who struck 132 not out, was joined by Woakes in a seventh-wicket stand of 204, which spanned 50 overs.

That helped the visitors, who begun the day on 27 for one, to 387 for seven at the close. Alfonso Thomas was the pick of the Somerset attack with 3-54 from 18 overs.

Chopra was in fine form at the start of the day, but soon lost partner Laurie Evans as he was held in the slips by Peter Trego, driving at Thomas.

Crucially, Trego then dropped Troughton on 12 at slip, Craig Meschede being the unlucky bowler.

The Warwickshire skipper helped take the total to 135 before Chopra was caught down the leg side by diving wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter off Thomas, having faced 122 balls and hit 17 fours.

Darren Maddy then gave Kieswetter another catch, this time diving in front of the slips, driving at Thomas, and suddenly the bowlers seized the initiative.

Tim Ambrose, on 18, edged a drive off Meschede and Trego took the catch at second slip. It was then 162 for six when in-form Rikki Clarke lamely hit a full toss from leg-spinner Max Waller straight back to the bowler.

At that stage, Somerset were in complete control - only for Woakes to prove a more reliable partner for Troughton.

Troughton reached his hundred in the final session with a four through extra cover off Waller; having taken 150 balls to make fifty, he needed only a further 81 to get to three figures.

Woakes was more fluent, hitting eight fours in his 84-ball fifty, and went on to a chanceless century off 142 deliveries, completing it with his 17th four off a Waller full toss.

By then, Somerset's bowling had lost any threat. They turned to Waller after just nine overs with the second new ball, an indication of the lack of seam-bowling support for Thomas.

Woakes finally fell for 107 in the closing overs, chipping a catch to midwicket off the left-arm spin of Arul Suppiah, but there was no moving Troughton, who by the close had batted for five and a half hours and faced 277 balls.
