Yorkshire pulled off an unlikely victory over Derbyshire in the LV= County Championship on the back of Jack Brooks' fine showing

Jack Brooks delivered a ferocious burst of bowling either side of tea on the final day of the LV= County Championship match at Headingley to unexpectedly give Yorkshire a dramatic victory over Derbyshire.

The former Northamptonshire paceman finished with 5-40 as the visitors crumbled to 163 all out, losing by an innings and 39 runs after racking up 475 in their first dig.

Brooks grabbed all his wickets in a 44-ball spell at a cost of 16 runs, with his final three victims falling for six runs in the space of 20 balls. Yorkshire earned 21 points to Derbyshire's five.

After losing their opening fixture to Sussex by an innings, Yorkshire have transformed their fortunes with two victories in a week.

The hosts led by 122 when they resumed the final day on 597 for five and wasted no time in going for quick runs, despite the early loss of Gary Ballance who was caught by Wayne Madsen off Jonathan Clare for 53 from 57 deliveries with three fours and two sixes.

Tim Bresnan drove Tim Groenewald for a big six before the bowler had him caught at long-on by Clare, but Adil Rashid and Liam Plunkett sped Yorkshire past their previous highest score against Derbyshire of 662 at Chesterfield in 1898.

Rashid was on 36 and Plunkett 21 when Yorkshire declared on 677 for seven, the joint fourth-highest total in the club's history, leaving a minimum of 84 overs in the match.

Bresnan struck quickly as Billy Godleman shouldered arms and was lbw in the third over but Chesney Hughes, who plundered an unbeaten 270 in the first innings, and Madsen, held firm until Plunkett split the pair at 43 by getting Hughes caught at second slip by Ballance off a loose drive.

Plunkett dealt Derbyshire another huge blow the ball before lunch by finding the edge of Shivnarine Chanderpaul's bat for wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow to take the catch, but in the afternoon Madsen and Wes Durston held the fort with a defiant stand of 92 in 16 overs which seemed to be taking the game out of Yorkshire's grasp.

But then Brooks began his devastating spell from the Kirkstall Lane End and first to go was Durston, who chipped straight to Phil Jaques at midwicket for 50 from 79 balls with seven fours. No sooner had Madsen registered his half-century than he, too, departed to Brooks, lbw for 52.

The slump continued with David Wainwright losing his leg bail to Rashid just before tea when Derbyshire were 157 for six and still 45 runs behind, and there was no relief for the visitors after the interval.

Dan Redfern was caught behind by a beauty from Brooks, which left the batsman late, and Tom Poynton was lbw to his first ball. It was so nearly a hat-trick but Groenewald's first delivery dropped down and touched the off-stump without dislodging the bail.

Groenewald was bowled by Rashid to make it 162 for nine and Brooks fittingly claimed the last wicket by getting the injured Tony Palladino lbw.

The game saw the most runs in a championship match in which a side went on to lose by an innings, and Hughes' knock of 270 not out was the fourth highest in the competition by a batsman ending up on the losing side.

Yorkshire's delighted first team coach, Jason Gillespie, said: "We have shown that in different situations we can score runs and take wickets. The players have got the belief, the right attitude and a good work ethic which are great things for them to have.

"They want to do well for each other and that is what we are trying to create."
