Paceman Steven Patterson grabbed two late wickets in two balls on the second day of the LV= County Championship Division Two match at Headingley Carnegie to boost Yorkshire's hopes of a crucial win over Glamorgan that could lead to promotion.

Starting their second innings 72 runs in arrears, Glamorgan had reached 17 when Patterson dismissed opener Nick James and nightwatchman John Glover before the visitors finished on 27 for two and still trailing by 45.

Second-placed Yorkshire began the day on 20 without loss and Adam Lyth and Joe Root added a further 19 before Root was lbw to Graham Wagg, the ball being one of several in the day which shot through low.

Lyth impressed with some flowing cover-drives but he lost Phil Jaques, who offered no stroke to a ball from Jim Allenby which failed to get up and was also lbw.

Captain Andrew Gale wasted no time in unleashing several powerful on-drives in a bustling partnership of 120 in 23 overs with Lyth, who completed his half-century off 98 balls with seven fours.

In attempting to cut off one of Gales' drives, Huw Waters slipped approaching the boundary edge and slid feet first into the wall - damaging his left ankle. The seamer was forced to retire from the action and his absence blunted the Glamorgan attack.

For the second consecutive match at Headingley, Lyth perished in the nineties - this time falling lbw to Glover for 95 from 138 deliveries with 14 fours.

Every time Yorkshire seemed to be getting on top they lost a wicket, Gale being fourth out with the score 200 - bowled by Wagg for 55.

Gary Ballance and Anthony McGrath added 61 together, with the latter’s lofted straight six off Dean Cosker a highlight.

Allenby put Glamorgan back on an even keel for a while by grabbing the wickets of Ballance and Andrew Hodd in consecutive overs shortly before tea.

Yorkshire slid into deeper trouble after the interval as Glover also struck twice in the space of two overs, Azeem Rafiq flashing unwisely to be caught behind and McGrath falling lbw for 39 off 78 balls.

At 286 for eight, Yorkshire's lead was a slender 14 but it was boosted by Ryan Sidebottom and Patterson, who both hit out to good effect to take their side to a third batting bonus point and almost a fourth.

But on 340, Patterson - who had been dropped at second slip by Walters - was comprehensively bowled by Allenby for 22.

The innings was rounded off by Wagg getting Sidebottom caught by wicketkeeper Mark Wallace to leave Yorkshire with a useful if not substantial lead.

It appeared much healthier, however, in the ninth over of Glamorgan's reply when Patterson claimed his two wickets in two balls, James departing to a low catch by Hodd diving to his left and Glover being well held at second slip by Lyth.
