Durham in a hurry

LV County Championship Division One leaders Yorkshire were swept aside for 184 after being put in to bat by Durham on a lively pitch at Headingley Carnegie.

One of their destroyers was England one-day captain Paul Collingwood, who helped to remove the tail with three quick wickets, but Durham were soon in trouble themselves and they closed on 59 for three after 22 overs.

Durham captain Dale Benkenstein rightly assumed there would be early movement off the pitch and through the air on an overcast morning, and both Michael Vaughan and Jacques Rudolph had their work cut out against Steve Harmison and Callum Thorp.

Rudolph managed two early boundaries off Harmison but Vaughan could not get moving against Thorp and off the 18th consecutive ball he faced from the paceman he was caught behind by Phil Mustard as he pushed forward outside off stump.

Liam Plunkett soon replaced Harmison and had Rudolph picked up at second slip by Michael Di Venuto, and he also cut short a budding partnership between Anthony McGrath and Adam Lyth by removing McGrath lbw with one that shot through low.

Yorkshire were 88 for three at lunch and a downpour during the interval meant play could not resume until an early tea had been taken, with 21 overs being cut from the day’s ration.

The left-handed pair of Lyth and Andrew Gale continued their promising stand and had added 58 together in 14 overs when the latter fell lbw to Plunkett for 33, Lyth departing for 40 in the following over as his edge at Thorp was deflected off Mustard’s gloves into Collingwood’s hands at first slip.

At 111 for five, Yorkshire had plenty of repair work to do and Gerard Brophy and Adil Rashid did not hesitate in going for their shots. But Rashid, particularly, looked uncomfortable when Harmison returned to the attack.

When he was joined by Durham’s sixth bowler, Collingwood, Yorkshire went to pieces, losing their last five wickets for 18 runs in five overs with the last four going down in 12 balls for the addition of four runs.

Harmison began the slide with a rising ball to Rashid being nudged to Albie Morkel at third slip to end a 57 stand in 13 overs.

Brophy took two fours and a two off consecutive balls from Collingwood before getting a faint touch down the leg side to be caught by Mustard, umpire Neil Mallender waiting a long time before raising his finger.

Tim Bresnan fell to Harmison in almost identical fashion to Brophy, while Collingwood brought the innings to a rapid close by knocking over Darren Gough and Hoggard’s stumps in the space of three balls.

Collingwood emerged with 3-17 off 3.5 overs while Plunkett also claimed three wickets and Harmison and Thorp two each.

Durham were soon under pressure themselves as Di Venuto was trapped by the second ball of the innings from Hoggard, whose new-ball partner Bresnan had Will Smith caught off an unpleasant delivery by McGrath at second slip.

Ben Harmison and Collingwood looked like playing out the remainder of the day but with three overs remaining Collingwood drove loftily at Adil Rashid’s fifth ball and Hoggard took a well-judged catch, running round from long off behind the bowler.
