Matt Coles enhanced his burgeoning reputation with four wickets as Kent took control against Yorkshire on the opening day of their LV= County Championship Division Two clash at Canterbury.

Coles, who scored a century against the same opponents in the reverse fixture at the start of the season, was on song with the ball today, taking 4-70 as Yorkshire were dismissed for 247 after being put into bat.

It could have been better for the 21-year-old, but he had another couple of opportunities dropped as Kent failed to put Yorkshire firmly behind the eight-ball.

The White Rose will be left to rue their batsmen’s carelessness, however. Their top order all failed to build on starts, with four players reaching 30, but none going past Gary Ballance’s 38.

Kent openers Sam Northeast, playing instead of injured captain Rob Key, and on-loan Scott Newman survived an over from Tim Bresnan to see their side through to the second day on four without loss.

With 21 wickets to his name already this season, Coles proved a handful for Yorkshire's batsmen by bowling short of a length at a healthy pace.

In an attritional opening session, he made the breakthrough, bowling Joe Sayers after the left-hander mistakenly shouldered arms, before Darren Stevens swung one in to trap Joe Root leg before.

After lunch, Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale stabbed at a good delivery from Mark Davies to be caught behind, while Stevens produced a similar delivery to send back Phil Jaques for 30.

Jonny Bairstow came to the crease and made an eye-catching 32, but, despite being dropped at second slip when on 12 off Coles, needlessly gave away his wicket by driving uppishly to short extra-cover to gift the seamer another scalp.

Bresnan and Ballance posted 51 for the sixth wicket before the former departed for 33; a quicker ball from James Tredwell pinned him leg before.

The second new ball was only nine deliveries old when Charlie Shreck ran one through the defence of Ballance to knock back middle stump and spark a collapse that saw Yorkshire lose their last four wickets for just 26 runs.

Adil Rashid feathered Shreck’s leg-cutter to wicketkeeper Geraint Jones after making 27 before Ajmal Shahzad picked out the only leg-side fielder in the deep to give Coles another scalp.

Ryan Sidebottom swished lustily to contribute 17 before being bowled by Coles.
