Frustrating day at Chesterfield

The second day of the LV= County Championship Division two match between Derbyshire and Yorkshire at Chesterfield became the latest victim of the wet summer when play was abandoned without a ball bowled.

Heavy rain throughout the night and again during the morning left the Queen’s Park outfield saturated and umpires Peter Hartley and Sundaram Ravi had no alternative but to send everyone home after an 11am inspection.

The rain finally cleared shortly after midday and the hope is for sun and a drying breeze for the rest of the day to give the ground a chance of being fit for play tomorrow.

Another washout was doubly frustrating for the teams as the match is intriguingly poised with Derbyshire 135 for seven in their first innings, still trailing by 84 runs, after Yorkshire were bowled out for 219.

Even though the game is well advanced, the loss of any more play would make it hard for either side to force a positive result, but at least the forecast is better for the remaining two days of this top-of-the-table contest.
