Hussey hammers Yorkshire attack
Yorkshire’s bowling was ripped apart by Australian David Hussey and New Zealander Andre Adams on the second day of their LV= County Championship match against Nottinghamshire at Scarborough.
Hussey, in his last appearance for Notts as their short-term replacement for fellow Australian Adam Voges, thrashed 189 with 26 fours and seven sixes off 205 balls.
Adams, coming in at number 10, caused further mayhem by blasting 84 from just 53 balls with five fours and eight sixes.
The pair were largely responsible for Nottinghamshire recovering from the depths of 125 for six to 395, so missing out by just five runs on a fifth batting bonus point.
The nightmare continued for winless Yorkshire who lost opener, Jacques Rudolph, to the second ball of the innings from Ryan Sidebottom and then Anthony McGrath late in the day to Adams to close on 25 for two.
Yorkshire were in a positive mood when Nottinghamshire began the day on 101 for five and their spirits rose still further with the early departure of Chris Read who had his off-bail trimmed by Matthew Hoggard.
But that was as good as it got for Yorkshire as Hussey wasted little time in sprinting on from his overnight 59 and moved into the 90s with three boundaries in an over off Tim Bresnan.
Leg spinner Adil Rashid, watched by England selector James Whitaker, was also given the treatment by Hussey who spanked him for fours on either side of the wicket to reach his century out of 162 for six and scored off 131 deliveries with 20 fours and a six.
Hussey continued on the sixes trail during his 147 stand for the seventh wicket with Paul Franks and, after clearing the rope against Rashid and left-arm spinner David Wainwright, he whacked Bresnan high over long-on before carving him to third man to take his career tally to 10,000 first-class runs.
The partnership was worth 112 by lunch and Hussey went on to celebrate his 150 by striking Wainwright over extra cover for six but Franks departed for 40 soon afterwards, bowled through the gate by Rashid as the left-hander aimed through the covers.
Luke Fletcher was lbw to Deon Kruis off the first ball he received and in between two more sixes for Hussey, Adams got off the mark with a maximum over mid-wicket.
With a double century seemingly there for the taking, Hussey went for one big hit too many against Rashid and Joe Sayers took a clean catch at long-on to leave Notts on 302 for nine.
There was more pain for Yorkshire on the resumption as Adams went on the rampage in a 93 stand in 17 overs with last man Sidebottom.
In desperation, Yorkshire called back Kruis whose first ball was helped by Adams into wicketkeeper Gerard Brophy’s gloves to end the slaughter, Sidebottom contributing an unbeaten 10 to the stand.
Sidebottom then struck again by bringing his second ball back to pin Rudolph lbw and Adams bowled McGrath in the penultimate over to complete a wretched day for the Tykes.
