Sussex storm to opening triumph
Sussex wasted little time on the final morning in wrapping up an innings-and-12-run victory over Yorkshire – the first win of the LV= County Championship season.
It was not the start Yorkshire, celebrating their 150th anniversary, would have hoped for as they returned to Division One and saw their run of 18 championship matches without defeat ended.
Jason Gillespie’s men were still 32 runs away from making Sussex bat again when they resumed on 228 for eight with Gary Ballance on 46 and Jack Brooks two.
Although Ed Joyce dropped Ballance at slip early on, the visitors were soon able to celebrate.
Chris Jordan ousted Brooks and Steve Magoffin then had Ballance, on 63, caught behind for his fifth wicket of the innings.
“Sussex batted and bowled better than we did and when that happens you tend to go down so it was very disappointing,” said Yorkshire first-team coach Jason Gillespie.
“To get bowled out for 96 in the first innings was unacceptable and we recognise that fact.
“It is too early to draw any conclusions and we knew that the standard of cricket was going to be challenging in the first division. We were not up to it here.”
