Lyth boosted by century
Adam Lyth was delighted with the way he batted to send Yorkshire to an eight-wicket victory over the United Arab Emirates in the Pro ARCH Trophy in Abu Dhabi yesterday.
The 21-year-old hit 112 before being caught with only 19 runs needed as Yorkshire chased down a target of 189 to beat their hosts.
He did not waste any time after being sent in to open the innings, rattling along at more than seven an over for much of his stay at the crease.
“I played good cricket shots and ended up scoring really quickly, which wasn't a plan, it just happened,” he said.
“I was disappointed not to get runs against Middlesex but it went really well today so I am pretty happy.”
Lyth is yet to establish himself fully in the Yorkshire side but he hopes playing well in pre-season will guarantee him a spot in the team for the first few games of the summer.
“I have got a lot of confidence now,” he said. “By getting a hundred here, hopefully I can kick on into the season and do very well.”
However, he was disappointed to get out trying another big shot - after 15 fours and a six in his innings - without seeing his side over the finishing line.
“I just tried to get it over the fielder at cow corner but got a bit of an edge,” he said. “But not to worry, hopefully I will get runs in the next game if I play.”
The next match for Yorkshire is to decide which teams come third and fourth in the final standings, with the defending champions finishing second in their round-robin group.
“It was disappointing not to get to the final,” Lyth admitted. “But we are in the third and fourth-place play-offs, so hopefully we can win that.”
