Tom Milnes’ seven wickets spared Warwickshire’s blushes as the LV= County Champions emerged victorious by 21 runs against Oxford MCCU in a tense encounter at The Parks.

Having held a slender first-innings lead of 23, Warwickshire began the third and last day on 72 for two but slipped to 131 all out at lunch.

After Will Porterfield and Jim Troughton fell for 10 and 30 respectively, none of their team-mates made double-figures as Charles Morris and Ben Kemp each boasted three wickets.

Milnes’ trio of early breakthroughs helped to leave Oxford - chasing 155 - 13 for four, but they recovered outstandingly as Lloyd Sabin struck 50 and Ben Williams 41.

Yet, having reached a strong position on 108 for four, the University side lost their last six wickets for 25 runs, Milnes finishing with outstanding figures of 7-39.

The other game that produced a positive result was at Headingley where Leeds/Bradford MCCU were dismissed cheaply for the second time as Yorkshire won by 294 runs.

Adam Lyth

Opener Adam Lyth struck a century to help Yorkshire seal a comfortable victory over Leeds/Bradford MCCU at Headingley

Alex Lees made 121, his maiden first-class ton, and Adam Lyth 111 before the hosts declared on 289 for two, leaving a notional target of 416.

New signing Liam Plunkett then took centre stage with 6-33 as Leeds/Bradford were dismissed for 121, just three more than they managed first time round.

Essex ran into Nipuna Senaratne’s resistance as Cambridge MCCU earned a draw at Fenner’s.

Senaratne struck 82 in a total of 177 for four, with brothers Akbar and Zafar Ansari adding 31 apiece. Ben Foakes earlier hit his first Essex hundred, allowing the visitors to declare on 420 for four and set Cambridge 650 to win.

Durham could only manage a stalemate with Durham MCCU.

After the students were set an unlikely 495 for victory at the Emirates Durham ICG, Chris Jones registered 43 and Rishabh Shah 57 not out in a score of 151 for five.

Durham declared their second innings on a lunchtime 244 for one, with Keaton Jennings, another player to register a maiden first-class century today, and Will Smith unbeaten on 102 and 101 respectively.

Cardiff MCCU also claimed a creditable draw against Glamorgan at the SWALEC Stadium.

The hosts declared on 241 for five, leaving their opponents a theoretical 348 to win. Cardiff made it to 144 for six thanks in part to Fabian Cowdrey’s 62.

Chris Nash grabbed his second match half-century as Sussex and Loughborough MCCU shared the spoils in a game ruined by a opening-day washout at the County Ground.

Wickets were shared round when Loughborough were dismissed for 155, Gavin Baker top-scoring with 44, having resumed on 54 for three in response to Sussex’s 297.

Nash then struck 60 not out and Ed Joyce an unbeaten 27 as the hosts reached 105 for two.
