Vikram Solanki was delighted with Worcestershire's effort

Vikram Solanki has hailed the character of Worcestershire’s side after they overcame the disruption caused by this summer’s floods to capture the NatWest Pro40 title without him.

The 31-year-old Worcestershire captain ran up a major phone bill on Thursday night from South Africa, where he is part of England’s Twenty20 squad, following his county’s progress towards victory over Gloucestershire in Bristol to seal top spot.

It was Worcestershire’s first trophy since winning the same competition in 2002 and Solanki joined in the celebrations from England’s hotel after returning from their opening victory over Zimbabwe.

But it was also a triumph for the club’s determination to succeed after two separate floods ensured no cricket was played at their New Road base after June 13.

“I’m obviously ecstatic to win the NatWest Pro40 after all the things that have got on at the club this season and it speaks volumes for the people involved at the club,” said Solanki.

“The one thing we’re fortunate with is that we have some good personalities and some good characters in the dressing room - it’s something we’ve worked hard at.

“I suppose there’s never been a sterner test than what’s gone on this year with the floods and not being able to play and a lot of players losing their kit at times.

“It’s a fantastic effort by all the lads. It’s pleasing because we’ve been a side in the recent past who have promised with two recent Lord’s finals even though we were disappointed in them.”

Since the second flood at New Road, Worcestershire have played “home” matches at Derby, Taunton and Edgbaston to increase the disruption but have remained unbeaten in nine one-day matches dating back to June 1.

“These things do test a side’s character,” added Solanki.

“We’re disappointed with the way things have gone in the championship but this is definitely a silver lining for the season and absolutely the best thing that could happen to the club.”
