Half-centuries from Glamorgan’s Mark Wallace and Tom Maynard set up Glamorgan’s first NatWest Pro40 victory for two years.
Responding to the home side’s 216 for seven from their 40 overs, with Wallace (85) and Maynard (65) sharing a stand of 108 in 18 overs, Surrey could only manage 138 all out in 33.2 overs under the Cardiff floodlights.
David Hemp chose to bat after winning the toss but Glamorgan made a stuttering start. Not only did they slip to 43 for four but they only managed to find the boundary twice in the first 15 overs.
Surrey were indebted to an accurate line from their opening bowlers Pedro Collins and Jade Dernbach, who were both rewarded with early wickets.
Dernbach struck in the second over to claim Richard Grant, who chased a wide one, while David Hemp mistimed a pull and was also caught behind via a top edge.
Michael Powell looked in relatively good form and was responsible for Glamorgan’s only two boundaries from the first 73 balls, before being bowled by Dernbach for 23, leaving the home side on 39 for three.
Glamorgan found themselves in more trouble when Jamie Dalrymple was trapped leg before by Chris Jordan for a 17-ball duck.
But from 43 for four, Wallace and Maynard started to rebuild, with the latter striking Usman Afzaal for a six and a four from consecutive balls.
Just after the fifth-wicket pair had added 100 in as many balls Maynard was run out coming back for a second. Wallace continued the good work. scoring his 85 from 80 balls before he was out in the final over.
Surrey suffered an early setback, losing Scott Newman to the second ball of the innings, caught behind off Jason Gillespie.
Gillespie produced an incident-packed seventh over. Four of the first five balls were hit for four by James Benning, who had his middle stump knocked back by the sixth.
Two overs later David Harrison struck to have Mark Ramprakash caught behind to leave Surrey 45 for three.
Robert Croft came on before the end of the powerplays and struck with his first ball, bowling Afzaal.
And in his third over Croft accounted for Jon Batty, who top-edged a sweep down deep backward square-leg’s throat.
Spin continued to have an impact with Croft (3-23), Dean Cosker and Jamie Dalrymple accounting for six of the last seven wickets to fall.
Wallace rounded off a good night taking three catches and claiming a stumping.
