Murray Goodwin smashed a six off the last ball to give Sussex victory over Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge and secure the NatWest Pro40 Division One title.
Goodwin and Mohammad Sami showed great character to share an impressive unbroken 99-run stand which clinched victory by two wickets.
The visitors had looked out of the match after making a terrible start in response to the 227 set for them by Nottinghamshire.
Samit Patel followed up the 78 that he had made with the bat by taking three wickets to finish with figures of 3-36 off his eight overs for Nottinghamshire.
The pick of his wickets was a delightful stumping by Chris Read after Patel had tempted Carl Hopkinson down the track with a looping delivery to remove him for eight.
Graeme Swann also took three wickets to end up with figures of 3-33.
But Goodwin hit a quickfire 87 off 64 balls to put his side back in a match that they had seemed well out of halfway through their innings.
He was helped along by Sami, who helped himself to 32 runs off 25 balls.
Needing 16 off the last over from Charlie Shreck, Sami called for a new bat to help his efforts and that seemed to pay off as he and Goodwin inched their way to a nail-biting victory.
Needing three to tie the match off the last ball, Goodwin stepped back and hammered a half-volley over the long-on boundary - to the Sussex fans' delight.
Lancashire will play next season in Division Two after being condemned to defeat by Somerset at Liverpool.
Somerset reached their target of 157 with three wickets in hand and just over 10 overs left to bowl.
Arul Suppiah top-scored for visitors by making 33 before being bowled by Gary Keedy, who finished with figures of 2-31.
Carl Gazzard and Alfonso Thomas ended the innings unbeaten on 30 and 11 respectively to give Somerset the win and condemn Lancashire to relegation.
Worcestershire face a play-off against Glamorgan next Sunday to decide if they are to play in Division One next season after they lost by 11 runs to Middlesex at Kidderminster.
Ben Smith hit 107 from 95 balls for Worcestershire to give his side a strong start before being run-out with the score on 241 for six.
Daryl Mitchell then hit 46 to put his side back on track but Dirk Nannes took four wickets to give Middlesex the win.
Durham survived an early scare to beat Gloucestershire at Chester-le-Street by five wickets.
The hosts had been set a modest target of 120 thanks to strong bowling efforts from a Durham attack headed by Steve Harmison and Gareth Breese, who picked up three wickets apiece.
The hosts made a terrible start by losing their first four wickets for 29 runs.
Jon Lewis made the first inroad into the Durham batting line-up by removing Phil Mustard for six and Steve Kirby then accounted for Shivnarine Chanderpaul for three, Will Smith for a duck and Gordon Muchall for seven.
However, an unbeaten 52 from Michael Di Venuto steered Durham home to victory and secured third position in the table.
