Nottinghamshire have moved quickly to replace opener Jason Gallian by signing Matthew Wood from Somerset.

The 26-year-old has joined on a three-year deal and is looking forward to regular first-team cricket after a year on the sidelines at Taunton.

Wood played two first-class games this summer, having lost his place following Marcus Trescothick’s return from England duty.

He said: “It’s been quite frustrating for me as there have been limited opportunities to play, and I can’t wait for the challenge of moving to Trent Bridge.

“I’m signing for a club on the up, who are in Division One in both competitions and play at a Test Match venue.

“Trent Bridge has been an enjoyable and successful ground for me in the past and I’m very much looking forward to next season.”

Notts director of cricket Mick Newell said: “Matthew is a quality player who has been unable to get into a very strong batting line-up.

“He’s a nice lad, an intelligent cricketer and at the right kind of age to be able to play in all competitions for us.”

Wood has scored 4,375 first-class runs in 76 games at an average of 34.72, with nine hundreds, including 113 against Notts at Trent Bridge in 2004.

His career-best of 297 came in a marathon nine-hour innings against Yorkshire at Taunton and helped him to 1,000 runs in 2005.
